My Golden "Nugget" has been with me for 14 years and 10 days. His birthday was 10 days ago and here is the photo I took of him as he got his favorite watermelon fed to him via a fork. He was kind, gentle and oh, so loving! He put up with my coming and going and the tiny terrorist, who used to ride him like a pony.
This past year his walks became shorter, his eyesight was failing and he bumped into trees - but he still saw me as I open the refrigerator or the treat jar. He followed me from room to room and would lay by my side. He slept a lot and basked in the sun while Mackey kept jumping into the pool. Mackey gave him new life and kept him going.
Nugget loved playing tug with the terrorist even if it made him bit more tired and tattered. Each night, they cuddled together and all was right in his world ...and mine.
Tonight it will be just Mackey and me.
Both of us have a hole in our heart and so much Lovefor our Golden Oldie who just crossed over the Rainbow Bridge today..9-9-2016
DOGS IN OUR LIVES
We aren't house proud. If we were we wouldn't abide the scratches on the door frame, the holes in the screen, the darkened shine of worn spots on the chair. We would wince at the mottled carpet and fret at the hair clinging to our clothes.
We don't. If anything, we lovers of dogs are a tolerant lot, finding greater value in the unabashed affection of our friend than immaculate sofas. Shoes can be replaced, but heroic retrievers are timeless.
Without dogs, our houses are cold receptacles for things. Dogs make a fire warmer with their curled presence. They wake us, greet us, protect us, and ultimately carve a place in our hearts and our history. On reflection, our lives are often referenced in parts defined by the all-too-short lives of dogs.

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass. When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. The old and frail animals are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again. They play all day with each other. There is only one thing missing. They are not with their special person who loved them on Earth. So, each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up! The nose twitches! The ears are up! The eyes are staring! And this one suddenly runs from the group! You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her in your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated. |
